I recently completed the volunteer training course with Home-Start, the course was incredibly informative and has really prepared me to step into the role of supporting families with confidence and sensitivity.
The trainers were knowledgeable and approachable, creating a safe and open environment where we could ask questions and share thoughts. I really appreciated how much focus was placed on understanding the challenges families might face and how best to offer non-judgmental, compassionate support. The aim being to support parents to be the best they can be, always keeping the child’s well-being as our top priority. They covered a wide range of topics, from safeguarding and listening skills to practical ways of helping families in different situations. It’s clear a lot of thought went into making the sessions both engaging and interesting, delivering all the information needed.
What stood out to me most was the emphasis on the child’s needs and remembering we can improve things but not fix them, it’s about helping parents to cope when we leave, respecting their unique needs and circumstances. The practical advice and examples shared were really helpful, and I now feel much better equipped to make a positive difference.
Overall, the training was a great balance of learning and reflection. I met some amazing people on my course and all the trustees, staff and volunteers I have met are lovely people who are there to support us.
