We are seeking a treasurer to join the board of trustees of our well-established charity. Our Treasurer of twelve years is stepping down and we’re looking for someone to help us ensure the financial success of our organisation. As a volunteer treasurer you will bring accounting experience and know how and work with the Chief Executive and the Chair to develop a budget, monitor the accounts and assure financial probity, compliance and sustainability.

Home-Start Bristol and South Gloucestershire (HSBSG) offers free, confidential and practical support to parents who are going through a challenging time and have at least one child under five.

As treasurer your role will be to:
• maintain an overview of HSBSG’s financial affairs;
• ensure the charity’s financial viability;
• oversee year-end and monthly accounts;
• assure regulatory compliance, risk management and financial controls;
• ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained;
• ensure that staff are paid;
• provide board-level liaison with external auditors;
• report regularly to the board.

You will need to show a willingness to contribute time and effort to the charity. We expect all trustees to attend a bi-monthly board meeting; that’s three a year on Wednesday evenings 5.30-8pm and three on Thursday mornings 9.15am-12 noon. The treasurer is also a member of the Business Development Committee which meets four times a year. If trustees cannot attend in person, they can attend remotely. In between board and committee meetings you will need to respond to emails and read papers, undertake training and attend one or two other ad hoc meetings as necessary. The time commitment as treasurer is approximately 2 days per month in addition to 6-8 hrs/month general trustee work.

What’s in it for you?
You can apply your existing skills and experience, giving back what you have learned along the way. For your own personal and career development, you can grow your experience and knowledge of the voluntary sector with training and the support of experienced board members experienced in charity governance.

Our aim is that together we proactively encourage inclusion and equality through policies and service design, fair staff management and sustainable finances. We would welcome your lived experience on the board.

We encourage you to apply if you are keen to . . .
• commit to supporting families with young children in and around Bristol;
• play a dynamic role as part of a small team steering and sustaining the charity;
• share your own skills and experience to improve our support to families;
• learn along the way;
• give your time voluntarily, i.e. unpaid, though agreed expenses will be reimbursed.
